T.S. Eliot level from the game Silent Conversation
Gregory Weir’s “Silent Conversation” is a most unusual word game: it’s a platformer where the platforms are made of literature. H.P. Lovecraft, Alice in Wonderland, Basho, and others provide the levels – your little letter “I” frolics among the words when you tap the arrow keys. Avoid the “powerful” red words, which set you back.
The gameplay isn’t perfect, as the penalty for touching powerful words feels too harsh and frustrating for a meditative game, but I love the fantastical idea of romping through an architecture of words. Also, being forced to pay attention to all the words led me very deep into the reading, especially of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” [see image]; I’d love to be able to sub my own text in, as this provides a mindful, slow-paced reading experience unlike anything I can simulate in meatspace. Play the game.

Communicating with parents is essential, rewarding, and usually helps students a great deal. However, writing paragraph reports as many as 5 or 6 times a year is – let’s be honest, teachers – something of a grind. If I weren’t a fast typist (silent thank you to Mrs. Brockman from 9th grade computer skills) I don’t know how I’d do them. Even typing that many words is rough, but typing intelligent, useful paragraphs that I’m proud of? That’s incredibly daunting, especially because I often can’t find the words I’m fishing for and end up staring at overly general reports. “Nice kid. Works hard. Pleasure to teach.” So I made myself the following giant list of adjectives to help jog my memory in describing a student’s work and personality, and hey, it might help you, too. (So far as I know, it’s the internet’s only such list that you don’t have to pay for.)
